BMW ICOM Firmware Update – ICOM A1 & ICOM A2 Step-by-Step Guide
In this guide, we will explain how to perform a BMW ICOM firmware update for ICOM, ICOM A1, and ICOM A2 (Common Version) – completely and step-by-step.
BMW ICOM Firmware Update – Step-by-Step
Step 1 – Connect ICOM:
- Connect the ICOM device (ICOM A1 or ICOM A2) to your computer with a network cable.
- Power the ICOM device with a 12V adapter or connect it to a BMW vehicle for power.
Step 2 – Open Internet Explorer:
- Open Internet Explorer (IE)
- Enter the following URL: http://169.254.92.38:60080/
- Log in with the following credentials:
- Username: root
- Password: NZY11502
Step 3 – Check ICOM Firmware Version:
- Click "Update Firmware" to display the current ICOM firmware version.
Step 4 – Update System Image:
- Select the file "ICOM-BootImage-xx-xx-xx.bin"
- Set the image type to SYSTEM
- Click "Send File"
- When prompted "Write image file to flash memory?" → click "Yes"
- During the process, the ICOM indicator light will be red.
- Wait until the message "The SYSTEM IMAGE update was successful" appears.
Step 5 – Update Application Image:
- Select the file "ICOM-ApplicationImage-xx-xx-xx.bin"
- Set the image type to APPLICATION
- Click "Send File"
- This step can take several minutes due to the file size.
- When prompted "Write image file to flash memory?" → click "Yes"
- The ICOM indicator light will turn red again.
Step 6 – Restart ICOM Device:
- After the update is complete, click "Restart" to reboot the ICOM device.
Important Notes – BMW ICOM Firmware Update
Set IP Address to Automatic:
Ensure your computer is configured to obtain an IP address automatically – before starting the update process.
Order of Firmware Update:
- First: smaller file (ICOM-BootImage-xx-xx-xx.bin) → Image type: SYSTEM
- Then: larger file (ICOM-ApplicationImage-xx-xx-xx.bin) → Image type: APPLICATION
Alternative – Firmware Update via ISTA-D Connection Manager:
- IP Address: 169.254.33.45:60080
- Password: NZY1150263 (for ICOM A2)
